High Key

Change is constant

You have heard it before, and you will hear it again. The only thing constant in life is change. The more things stay the same, the more they change.

Yep, it’s true. I have been struggling with this fact for more years than I really want to say. We all do, so what can we do?

I have come to realize that the only thing we can do is embrace change. Accept it for what it is. A setback, or an opportunity.

Creator’s block

I have been struggling this past year with my demons. I think I have improved my work to a point that it is good. Better than good. Not great mind you but good enough. I have been encouraged as my work has won a few awards. Minor awards, but awards none the less. I should be happy with where my creativity is taking me.

But I am not.

Into the light

I didn’t mean to take this post in this direction when I started, but what the heck…

I am experimenting with a technique called High Key. It is a technique where the image is boosted almost to the point of over exposure. A lot of detail can be lost. On the other hand, done right, the subject of the image becomes a star.

This shot of a white-crowned sparrow shows what can happen. A blah, mundane image can be converted into a bright, enjoyable portrait of a lovely bird.

Where’s my mo-jo?

So, the change. I plan to look for more opportunities to use this technique, to embrace the bright. I really like the result that is hanging over my desk. In these times of dark news and stress, it’s good to have a bright little bird smiling down on you.
